The magic & story line was good, but besides Barnabus none of the characters were interesting at all.

While I enjoy the Falling Kingdoms series much more, I really enjoyed this. It was a nice fill in book while waiting for the next falling kingdoms book. As always Morgan Rhodes is fantastic at her character development. While It did take me longer to connect with these characters I enjoyed reading about them from the very beginning. They are all such interesting characters and it's fun and interesting to see them grow and change. I did like how this was set in modern day Toronto and also in Mytica, it was like reading two stories in one that just happened to connect really well with each other.
All in all I really enjoyed this book and now I am dying to get my hands on the next one. I need it in my life.

*3.5/5*

I flew threw this, it was fun. But I did have some issues with the characters.

I'll be continuing with this trilogy. but I do like the Falling Kingdoms series better.

5 stars. I LOVED THIS. IT.IS.AMAZING. A Book of Spirits and Thieves is definitely one of my favorite books of the year! Heck, I’m more excited for its sequel than I am for Frozen Tides! (Don’t get me wrong, though – I’m still ridiculously excited for that, too.) There was just something about this particular story that really gripped and fascinated me. The alternate time periods probably has something to do with it! I loved going back and forth between the worlds, and I didn’t tire of anyone’s viewpoint! I loved every single one of these characters! This story was such a ride, and there were so many times I completely forgot my surroundings and got so caught up in the story, I remember thinking “YES! I’ve been waiting for a book like this!” Now that I’m finally out of my ridiculously long reading slump, I’ve been enjoying books even more so than usual! But now I’m struggling with deciding what to read because THERE’S SO MUCH TO CHOOSE FROM

The plot of this book just blew me away. I love time/world travel, and Morgan Rhodes handled it so well. It’s been too long since I’ve read a book like this! (I think A Thousand Pieces of You was the last one…and I’m DYING to read Ten Thousand Skies Above You but everyone has it on hold at the library #bitter) I will say that I got confused at times (what’s new), but I think it’s because I was so excited and anticipated every page turn, so I probably read too fast to absorb all the information.

The characters were just great. Farrel is such a problematic fave. Like, I have so many issues with him, I want to grab him by his shoulders and shake some sense into him, but at the same time I’m still invested in his story and rooting for him? I just hope he realizes his wrong and empathizes with his brother more! Though I was bothered by his almost instant attraction to Crys. Maddox is definitely my favorite. I loved his chapters and point of view so much. Thankfully, the romance between him and Becca felt more real to me! It still happened fairly fast, but given the odd circumstances, I found it to be very believable. I did like Crys, though not as much as the other two main characters. They seemed more complex to me! I can’t wait to see how they all develop in future books!

So…The Darkest Magic comes out in June. Can I time travel and read it now?

So I checked this one out of the library thinking it was a completely different (nothing to do with Falling Kingdoms) novel. But surprise! Its a spin off, and it will be a series! I really enjoyed how this was done, considering most spin offs are disasters at best. I instantly connected with Crys and was really surprised with each plot twist. Which I really can say I didn't see any of them coming. I enjoyed reading each characters point of view and felt that they all connected nicely. I can't wait to read the next one! I'm not sure how many she has planned, but I am very interested in this more modern connection to Mystica.

This story takes place in today's world, but it is also a prequel to the Falling Kingdoms series.

I adored the falling kingdoms series and was very excited to read this spinoff series! It did not disappoint! The beginning was a bit difficult switching between 2 different worlds and trying to find a connection. Once that connection was made… oh my I loved it!
It gave me some City of Bones vibes… mysterious magical coma, a mother who keeps big secrets..
I really liked reading the narration from 3 of the characters.
