I read this book as part of a challenge I joined.

Ricky the Runt is the story of a little bird who is even littler than his siblings. The story shows how you don't have to try to be anything more than what you are to get people to like you and be your friend. You don't have to try too hard, or do things that don't feel natural to you. I love this lesson and I think even kids in middle and high school could stand with learning it (or re-learning it!)

While these delightful books would be best for children in Kindergarten through third grade, I just love the little life lessons they give. It would be nice if they were used in some sort of buddy reading program where older kids could be reminded of these lessons as they read to the younger ones.

Ricky the Runt is the story of a Terror Bird who isn't quite as scary as his name makes him out to be. His siblings tease him because he is the 'runt', but he sets out to prove he can be just as scary as them. Along the way, though, Ricky learns a very valuable lesson. Sometimes it's better to be nice than to be mean and scary.

A great story with a great message. One of my favorites in the Bird Brain series. 5 stars!
