Conan the Cimmerian, no longer a peripatetic wanderer, but now the King of Aquilonia battling political intrigue and undead sorcerers.It is essentially the summation of a number of prior stories rolled into a novel. It's a real tragedy that Howard committed suicide, for innumerable reasons, which also include not getting more full Conan novels

Genel olarak hoşuma giden bir kitap oldu. Parmakla gösterecek kadar olumsuz bir şey bulamadım ama çok beğenmeme nedenim sadece eğlenceli bulmamış olmam. Conan hakkında okuduğum ilk kitaptı bu. Gördüğüm kadarıyla bir sürü kısa öykü varmış fakat tek roman bu. Kronolojik olarak sanırım daha sonra olacak olayları anlatıyor bu yüzden seriyi umursuyorsanız bir Conan kılavuzu bulmanızı tavsiye ederim. Ben seriyi pek umursamadığım, sadece Unutulmuş Fantastik Klasikler adı altında okumak istediğim için okudum. Çok kısa bir kitap değil ve bir şekilde bana okutturdu kendini bu yüzden bile başarılı diyebilirim. Birçok önemli yazara ve kitaba ilham olan birisi olması ve kılıç ve büyü alt türünün de öncülerinden olması nedeniyle en az bir kere okunması gereken yazarlardan diye düşünüyorum. İleride karşıma Conan öyküsü çıkarsa okurum fakat özellikle arar mıyım bilmiyorum.

Why haven't I read Robert E Howard before? I always had the impression that it was overwritten and simpleminded. Instead, I found the writing to be mostly graceful (with some very stilted dialogue, but purposefully stilted). And it was simply a ton of fun.
It turns out this is his only novel, which is a shame. As for the simplemindedness, it comes across as almost entirely episodic. Conan needs to recover some magical doo-hickey which will enable him to counter an incredibly evil sorcerer who will take over the world. Along the way, there's lots of slaughter and Conan gets enough concussions to keep him forever out of the NFL.
Of course, Conan wins out and the baddies get what they deserve, but it somewhat surprised me that Conan wins at least as much on the strength of his intelligence as he does by the strength of his arms. My only gripe about this as a novel is that Conan is such a loner that there is not much in the way of other through characters in the book -- basically the only ones are the bad guys who sometimes take center stage when the scene shifts to them. This structure lent even more to the episodic nature of the books. That said, the episodes themselves are tons of fun.
So why haven't I read Robert E Howard before. If someone had introduced these to me as an early teenager, I likely would have become completely hooked. I will definitely be looking for more by him in the future.

What to say about Conan? From the little I've read, there's better stories than this one. This is just your regular ol' adventure story through a 1920's view of the ancient world. I found the story to be only slightly compelling and the defeat of the big bad guy anticlimactic.
