Known as a “cult classic”, I really tried to like this novel, but the story was overtaken by the violence, racism, misogyny and rampant toxic masculinity. I mean, Hunter S. Thompson is a talented and very intelligent writer, but this novel was just too much. The only thing keeping it at a four star is the fact that I was able to draw a lot of parallels between problems in America in 1971 when it was written and the present. Anyone else see the problem there?
Not funny... Sorry. I wanted to like this, I really did.

I thought the book was very chaotic and enticing, it felt like a wild ride. It was interesting to read through the lens of people who are on a bender and combining crazy kinds of drugs together. This book fulfilled my teenage curiosity and interest of being in altered states of mind, but taken to the next level. It was a fun read and I enjoyed shared bits of it with others
