I couldn’t help but laugh out loud several times while reading this. The absurd logic behind the two main characters’ despicable behavior is instantly recognizable to anyone who has encountered functioning addicts. Thompson also masterfully captures the sporadic and emotionally charged spirals into the darkest depths of sheer terror and overwhelming anxiety associated with drug use, as well as the invasive psychotic paranoia. It’s a fantastic read.

One of my favorite books when I was 18. Reread in my late 20s - the skewering of the end of the 60s and American materialism is still prescient

"too weird to live too rare to die" even though it's not directly from this book (though it does appear in the film) I think perfectly summaries Hunter S. Thompson
