I found this book to be wildly entertaining. I think it'd be better than the movie with J. Depp. The mind of an addict is one thing. The mind of an intelligent and conscious drug abuser is a whole new story. It blows my mind that Thompson is able to capture the emotions and the play by play actions of these two characters (who apparently are based on his own life and he alludes to that a few times throughout the book.) It's hilarity and irony also keep the reader going. The characters are in the search for the American Dream. But to get there they lie, steal and act like total degenerates. The American Dream is never really defined by Thompson and the typical definition certainly doesn't apply here.

DID NOT FINISH

I tried so hard to get into this book but ultimately abandoned it at the end of part 1. Eventually I started reading out of spite in order to finish it to write this review. None of it made any sense and I had no reason to care about the main character. Was so bored and confused, would not recommend.

I first fell in love with "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" as a sophomore at Michigan State while on a trip with my mom and her friends, all of them part of the hippie culture of the 70s. They were gleefully quoting passages to crack each other up and when they found out I had no clue what they were talking about, they begged me to read it.

From the first page, I was hooked and found myself randomly bursting into fits of laughter. To keep up with this insane tale is a treat and I have found myself reading it again and again over the years, which eventually lead me to other gems, such as "Hell's Angels". Thompson was such a great talent, if you haven't read any of his stuff, this is the place to start.

Interesting

I enjoyed the book but I did watch the movie first so that helped me understand most of the crazy drug thought processes all in all a nice short read.
