A college friend recommended this book to me. He loved it so much and it was critically important to him that I read and love it as much he did. It was definitely not my style at the time, but my friend was a good one and someone who I deeply admired and respected. So, I slogged through and read it. I am so glad that I did because it opened a new world to me of a very special writer and his great fans. Reading this book made me a member of a very special and eclectic "club". It was not until years later, when I had much more life experience that I began to really appreciate the genius contained in this book. I am so glad that my friend insisted that I join him in it.
I think that I would have enjoyed this more at a different time.
This was different from the types of books I normally read, but it's my boyfriend's favorite book so I had to do it. Despite the scary illustrations and my covering up inappropriate words (read it on the plane), I really enjoyed it. It also made me never want to do drugs, so there's that.
Nothing short of MAGNIFICENT. This is what fiction’s all about baby.

This is the account of the time Hunter S. Thompson went to cover the Mint 400 desert race and the district attorney's conference on narcotics and dangerous drugs. Joined by his attorney, Dr Gonzo, the two of them then spent the next week in a drug fueled stupor, leaving a trail of terrified workers behind them.
The book is written in a gonzo journalism style and contains musings on the death of the 60's counter culture. They also discover that law enforcement is ten years behind on its understanding of drug culture. I enjoyed when swipes were being taken at authority but felt sorry for all the poor people that they terrified, like the hitchhiker and the young woman Lucy who painted portraits of Barabara Streisand
Overall, an interesting book with some wild illustrations.
