Great graphic novel. The art really captures what I would expect 60's New York to look like. Parker is one hard man.

'Parker: The Hunter' is by Richard Stark. This edition has illustrations and an introducton by Darwyn Cooke, who has been doing graphic novel treatments of the Parker novels.

Parker is not a nice guy. Especially when he's been double-crossed and sent to prison. Especially when his wife is untrue, and someone has stolen a bunch of money. Now he's out of prison and he wants to set things right. He is on the hunt and no one will stand in his way. Not his ex-wife. Not the guy who did this to him. Maybe not even the mafia.

This book was written in 1962, and while elements may feel a bit dated (I prefer the terms classic and nostalgic), the character feels like something out of a Liam Neeson movie. This is the character that gave birth to a lot of the modern anti-heroes we cheer on in fiction and film.

Darwyn Cooke's occasional illustrations are a direct homage to the story and era. They are full color and full page and I really loved them.

The introduction won't give any new information to true fans, but for the casual or new Westlake reader, you'll learn that this was almost a singular novel, but thanks to a publisher, it spawned a series of great novels. This is a great edition if you've never read anything in the Parker series. If you like a story about a man with a relentless thirst for revenge, you should love Parker.

I received a review copy of this ebook from Diamond Book Distributors, IDW Publishing, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

Just plain good. Crime noir at its finest, and the art is excellent.

Very dynamic and interesting crime noir graphic novel. The first couple of times I picked up this book the art didn't grab me but after reading it, I found it to be perfect for the subject. It was filled with harsh lighting and stark lines. The dialogue snapped and bit without falling into cliche, (too often). I read the book in one sitting

Good book. I liked Cooke's art a lot more here than I did in New Frontier vol 1. The story seems a little thin - I wonder if it unfolds a little slower in the novel.

To be honest, I think this would be a 3.5* book. But the star ratings are pretty arbitrary anyway.

From Durning Library - last due date 8th October 2011.

Very compelling noir with beautiful illustrations. As misogynistic as you'd expect.

When I found out the local used bookstore was closing for good, I headed down there to use up my store credit. This was one of my purchases.

I last read the Parker series when University of Chicago Press reissued them and I forgot most of the wrinkles of the first book so this was an all new reading experience for the most part.

Darwyn Cooke has crafted something amazing here. Unlike a lot of adaptations, it stands on its own but remains faithful to the spirit of the original work. I was skeptical that Cooke's Tothian style would be suitable for the subject matter but he brilliantly captures the tone of the series.

His Parker is a little more handsome than I pictured Parker when I read the books but I was quickly on board. The baddest thief around is the baddest thief around in any medium. This was a slam dunk for me. Five out of five stars.
