An adorable little book full of beautiful illustrations and a story that radiates warmth. The binding is perfect, the detail is amazing, and the last page is wonderful. It's such a concentrated blast of loveliness that it's hard not to recommend it.

When a family hosts an "exchange student" in their home, some of the unusual things he does, like sleep in the pantry, are chalked up to just being a "cultural thing", but when he slips away one day with little more than a goodbye, the family is left wondering about the curious way he left and what he left behind.
I'll be the first to admit, I know that Shaun Tan is brilliant, but I've just never "got" his work before. The book Eric may be diminutive in size, but it is packed with meaning and wonder, while being much more accessible and easier to follow than his other works. In fact, I think I may say that it is quite delightful. I highly recommend that Eric be a gateway book for the works of Shaun Tan. It isn't quite as avante garde as his other books and is therefore a good starting point to work into some of his more unusual and head scratching works.

Very fun and heartwarming. I always enjoy how Tan's works carry multiple layers of meaning.

Weird but good which is really what I'd expect from this author. The writing is really good. Clearly Eric is supposed to be very small, but it is the part of the story I like the least. Very wordy for a picture book, so this might be more of an illustrated book. The art works, the length works. Short and interesting.
