Surrealism is a bit of a slog at length unless you have the gifts of someone like Leonora Carrington or the ability to map your novel around occult imager like Ithell Colquhon. Thankfully this, although breathless and strange and very obviously mostly the product of automatic writing, is always enjoyable enough to carry you through the occasional moments when it details. It has more of the spirit of L’Age D’Or about it which probably has a lot to do with the dada leanings of Desnos. That he and Breton were going to come at loggerheads is really not surprising when you read this. Quite the thing
