Was actually fairly impressed with how fantastic the writing was in this book. The first story stuck with me long after I'd moved on to the second and the third, and the story the title was named after was possible my favorite of them all. Very spook.

Short Summary: A collection of ten short stories including "As They Continue to Fall", a man who hunts angels, "Hell They Call Him, the Screamers", a butcher that liberates souls, "Hell Creek", dinosaurs that won't stay dead long, and "We Are Where the Nightmares Go", a little girl opens a door beneath her bed.

Thoughts: This was a most excellent collection of bizarre and horrific stories that included a short story he had written twenty years ago, effectively showing the evolution of Cargill's writing from fantastic to superb.

Verdict: I've read a few of Cargill's novels (Dreams and Shadows is absolutely fantastic and 100% worth checking out) but when an author excels at short fiction it always makes me sit upright. More, please!

I received this book free from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Overall an eclectic collection of horror/thriller stories, each with its own charm. While some felt familiar, others felt refreshing and new. There are dinosaurs, ghosts, butchers, and bombs.

There was only one that I did not care for, a backstory from a different book written by this author. Without spoiling anything, it felt tone deaf given the real history and genocide that occurred in its setting. A white kid vs "evil" indigenous people.

I would absolutely read this collection again and again...while skipping that story in particular.

Another collection of short stories for spooky season - but it's fair to say this one didn't rate as well as "If It Bleeds". Here's how they rated for me individually:

The Town That Wasn't Anymore: 3⭐
A short story of spirits and a portal from Hell, and the town that's trying to survive it.

We Are Where the Nightmares Go: 3.5 ⭐
Solidly creepy story about nightmares, the thing under your bed, and the creepiest of clowns.

As They Continue to Fall: 1⭐
Honestly, this is the shortest story at only 10 pages, and I still DNF'd it.

Hell Creek: 5⭐
Dinosaur zombies. DINOSAUR. ZOMBIES. I wish this had been the whole book. I need a movie.

Jake & Willy at the End of the World: 2⭐
Not entirely sure what's happening here, other than (obviously) the end of the world. Meh.

The Last Job is Always the Hardest: 5⭐
A man who thinks he should be able to choose who lives and dies, realizes it's not a job he wants.

Hell They Call Him, The Screamers: 2⭐
Straight gore, minimal story.

I Am the Night They Never Speak Of: 2⭐
Uncomfortable on several levels - the story of a creature who eats sin.

A Clean White Room: 3⭐
Demon's are escaping hell and it's one man's job to send them back - but there's gonna be a lot of gore and some war flashbacks along the way.

Honestly there were a couple diamonds in the rough here, but most of this book I found just wasn't for me.
