I found it boring for majority of it and only redeeming quality to it was the ending, the rest just felt thrown together and was quite exceedingly slow paced and it also felt like nothing was happening at all till the end.

First, a warning: this book has quite a bit of swearing in it. That's why it's on the Banned Books list. It also has a witch, which I'm sure doesn't help.

But this is a great book. It's funny and it's got some suspense and I really enjoyed it. In a way it's sort of disturbing how mean kids can be to each other, but they get through it and then they usually get to be adults who feel like they paid their dues. Sachar always comes through the good stuff. I mean, didn't you love [book: Holes]?

Louis Sachar's novels tend to be thought provoking and cast with lively, multi-layered protagonists. This is not an exception. As far as plotting, characterization, and technical skill goes, there's not really much to critique. As far as novels go, it wasn't really my cup of tea. I couldn't tell you why exactly, and I shall have to mull over the question more. I do feel that the themes are a bit jumbled and uncohesive. He utilizes several different themes, but none of them are really brought to maturation, and they stand largely alone with little interrelation, and the novel suffers for it.

I found the story a bit interesting, the process of growing up and the awkwardness of first loves, but the language and actions aren't things that'd I'd like to hear and certainly don't use, nor would I allow the students I teach get away with either. As story telling goes, it is a good story. I just wish that the language wasn't such a large part of the story. I was glad that the protagonist did own up to his misdoings in the end and that his friends did stand up with him. Unfortunately, there will always be people who will go down to the lowest common denominator to be liked, rather than help their "would be" friends up.
