I did not enjoy this, and I think that's entirely on my expectations. This is strictly and apocalypse and survivalist book. I had thought there would be more focus on family or narrative or the importance of literacy, but it feels much more straightforward than that. Most of the book is about the cruelty in survival, with a brief undercurrent of a child's heartbreak and a vaguely hopeful conclusion. For a book set in the (presumable) future, it feels very dated. I think I'd've appreciated it more if I'd read it closer to when it was published.

"гига яко", както би казал един от близнаците. антиутопия, черно на бяло със страхотно внушение на илюстрациите. кормак маккарти среща PG-13 версия на джунджи ито.

Beautifully rendered and engrossing, but excessively harsh. Not to my tastes.

Sometimes a book just hits the right spot and this did it. Land of The Sons is about two brothers in a post apocalyptic/fall of civilization world trying to decipher their father’s diary. Simple enough premise, but it’s filtered through this almost coming of age feeling to it that really grabs me. The plight of the younger brother and his need for validation is almost instantly relatable and the outward conflict is interesting enough to match the almost rapid fire pace of this story. It’s almost 300 pages but I feel as if I read it all in about 30-40 minutes. Nothing about this story made me want to slow down. The story’s commentary on masculinity I thought was particularly effective. The younger brother tries his best to become comfortable with both himself and his role in this do or die world.

The cartooning in this by Gipi is pretty excellent. He utilizes a ton of thin, dark lines to add some awesome textures to scenes at night or enveloped in shadow and leaves the panels open during the day having these large open spaces that enforces the loneliness of these characters.

The Road meets Mad Max, in a swamp. Well done, but hella depressing. Post-apocalypse sad survival stuff. Just enough hope for me to still like it, despite the brutality.
