"Animal Man" continues in Lemire's half-super hero, half-horror story about Buddy Baker's desperate battle to protect his daughter from the world-threatening incursion of the Rot.

Knowing basically nothing of this character beyond what took place in the first volume, I still greatly enjoyed this story--which takes place solidly in the DC universe but also stands distinctly on its own. Often dark and gruesome, the story finds its core in the family dynamics of Buddy and his daughter as they are caught up in a battle from beyond the limits of their world.

I really like what DC has done with the Red, The Green and The Rot. Animal Man is a comic book with feral art and story, pun intended. The art is perfectly aligned with the plot, and makes for a visceral read. Must be read in conjunction with the Swamp Thing series to really get the whole impact of the story.

There is something about the idea of a road trip with a talking cat, an animal healing four year old, a bitter grandmother, a D list super hero and his estranged wife that just appeals to me.

Love this series, Jeff Lemire is a brilliant writer.

Besides, who doesn't love to see someone tear a wolf in half or punch the head off a rabbit?
