I certainly enjoyed this book more than the last in the series, though it was best enjoyed without thinking too hard about it or trying to figure out how it all makes sense in the chronology. Although the whole series is about girls having adventures, which I have always loved about it, this one in particular felt like girls having adventures together.

It was more adventurous then the previous books of the Wizard of Oz series. Although it did mention Tik-Tok for a portion of the story as a soldier and prisoner, I thought it would be mostly of him rather than the Shaggy Man or Queen Anne's story. Its good to see some balance in story telling with different character development. Yet, the story line is quite standard of how the author made it for all Oz books after the first one in which there is a new character traveling, a squabble, it gets resolved happily and then they almost all go to the Emerald City and meet Ozma.

The next book in the Oz series. Very cute story, combining all characters but focusing Shaggy Man more than Tik Tok, as they travel to find Shaggy Man’s brother who was captured by the Nome King. We are introduced to Betsy Bobbin and her mule pal, Hank.

It really is interesting- TikTok of Oz is a totally brazen retread of old ground for this series, and yet it succeeds and comes across as one of the better Oz books. It’s obviously a redux of Ozma of Oz, or a remix if you will. The Nome King of Ev has imprisoned someone and an army from Oz comes to stop him, also they meet TikTok along the way. What’s more is that the characters are also obviously reinterpretations of old Oz characters. Queen Ann is General Jinjur, her army is based on the army of Oz, Princess Ozga is Princess Ozma, Betsy Bobbin is egregiously a Dorothy clone… but the plotting is tighter and often the characterization is more on point here, so I can’t help but find it thoroughly enjoyable. Ozma of Oz in particular is a very precious and beloved book for me, and yet I feel that if I detach myself and look at the two more critically, TikTok of Oz might be argued to be the better book.

So, it's been two months since I listened to this. And I just read the Wikipedia article to refresh myself. And I can not, for the life of me, recall a seingle detail of this story except for Toto's speaking at the end. Everything else just blends in with every other Oz story. I'm sure kids will enjoy the continued frivolity--and yes, that's the intended audience--but for myself, I will never read this again. The Oz books are just too interchangeable.
