Maybe soon I'll write a full review. For all now I can say is it's been a long time since a book made me feel so little. 2 stars.

The vagueness of the story caught me off guard. The protagonist has no name, only known as the biologist. The setting is richly described, with forests, marshes, canals, and beaches, but there’s no indication of its location within our world, only its designation as Area X under the control of the Southern Reach. There’s a sense of modernity, but technology has been removed and the decay of the evidence of human activity eliminates a distinct time frame. Yet all of this contributes to the eeriness that helps drive the story. I never really knew what was going on, only that the biologist survived to share her narrative and would continue to explore Area X in search of her unnamed husband.
