i loved this book even though sad. I was actually kinda shocked that CrookedStar's brother was OakHeart[silly me] and so when MistyFoot becomes MistyStar that isn't too surprising because she has TWO leaders in her heir ! So hope you like this book it is a must read!
(writing on mobile, forgive me for bad formatting haha)
most of these super editions can be hit or miss. crookedstar's promise is 100% a hit. while it's not quite on the same level as tallstar's revenge, it's definetely one of the best super editions we've gotten out of the series so far.
it has a stupendous beginning and end, but some of the middle chapters feel like filler, and take up space where we could have a more fleshed-out ending. the real tragedy at the end happens far too fast which - while it may be to justify crooked's snappy grief, with everything being ripped away from him so quickly - a lot of these deaths could have had much more time spent on them (shellheart's speech was impactful, but he ended up dying off-screen!).
that being said, crookedstar's promise does have a fair share of absolutely heart-wrenching deaths. i won't spoil them, as i implore you to read it first to get the real impact, but crooked's reaction to one near the end got me especially emotional, with a truly depressing depiction of grief we haven't really seen before in warriors.
to be a bit nitpicky, i did notice some errors within the book with crooked's name being changed on accident. this happens twice, once called crookedstar before he becomes leader, and then being called crookedpaw during hailstar's vigil. it's nothing to complain about, but it's surprising that this happens twice.
ive been complaining a lot in this review, but i swear this book is deserving of the 5/5 ive given it. the journey we see crooked go on is wonderful, with all the ups and downs included. it fits so perfectly with the main series, and gives us a new, sadder perspective to characters like silverstream and oakheart.
seeing familiar names like talltail, thistleclaw, and other background cats fits this book in perfectly with the timeline, as well as giving us new information on the workings of riverclan, a clan we dont see much of within the main series. while parts do feel rushed (the gang of young apprentices became warriors in.. about 3 moons? when it took crookedstar a good quarter of the book?), where other parts feel bloated and unnecessary (rolling my eyes at every mention of twolegs), the rest of the book makes up for it completely.
i think it might just be because of the super editions, but all the characters ive read about so far are quickly becoming my favourites - onto yellowfang's secret!!

At first, I didn't really like Crookedstar all that much, but when I read this it gave me a much better understanding. I really liked this book and I like the backstory books that Erin has made.
And after all the shit he goes through in this book, Oakheart and Silverstream still gotta die
