A bit more melodrama than is my favorite, but nonetheless very effective about the absurdity of race, colorism, and white America’s relentless inhumanity. Some lovely, and sometimes dry, writing. Great as our January/into February readalong.

I had to read this book for my literature and slavery class and I definitely cried at the end. Well worth the read, especially when examining it in a historical context.

The plot is super constructed at times, doubly so because the narrator is omniscient and gives hints to the future, but it was still a nice read and I suppose it's rather astonishing for a story like that to make its way into the world of literature around the turn of the century. It will be interesting to discuss it in class.
