I feel so bad for rating this only 3 stars, especially since it’s a true story, but I just don’t think this was done very well. There was very little text even for a graphic novel and I just feel like that was really a detriment to the narrative. Between the text and the art, you get the basics of what is happening but it feels like there’s a lot missing from the story itself and in the background the authors could have provided and I can’t figure out why it was excluded. This would have been such a great opportunity to provide more context for the religious persecution experienced by Muslims in China and I feel like this just didn’t live up to its potential. Overall, the best part of this book for me was the interviews included in the back.
