I read this book when it first came out in 2017 and again in Apr 2024 in anticipation of the new HBO release. When it first came out I was living alone for the first time, a freshman in college, had just broken up with my first love- I had a completely different lens. This most recent read, I think I finally *got* it. A lot of this book is really heavy, but it’s realistic. The ending is
mildly hopeful, but again, so relatable as someone who has lived just enough life to know that it does get better.

This book was really good, it just didn’t hit for me. I related to Aza, but I found myself skimming her monologues. I would have been obsessed with the hint of romance a few years ago, but now I found it a little insta lovey, but somehow brief at the same time. The message was there, but the mystery element was weak. In the end, this book was just too aggressively young adult for my tastes.

Reread in prep for the movie release and it’s still my favorite John Green book. 🧡

Very quick read (listen)! Aza and her inner voice are compelling and engaging. The plot outside of Aza is interesting and moves the story along without taking from or forcing the conversation around Aza's intrusive thoughts and actions.
