It's like reading a dictionary, except instead of gory details it's wildly obscure cultural references.

I'm not really sure who the audience for this was supposed to be because it kind of feels like a middle-grade book in many places and ways but the vocabulary (not to mentioned the surprising amount of cursing) seems to put it beyond that audience. But it's also just kind of not that interesting when you know most of the terms except for really obscure slang from the 30s you'll never use again.

It seems like the sort of thing I would have been into as a kid (I used the dictionary so much it broke despite how boring many of those pages were), but as an adult I wouldn't give this to kid-me. Just doesn't feel dialled in right.
