Really sad & difficult read but glad I read it. Only deducted a bit because pacing felt weird between alive & dead parts.

This book is really beautifully done. It’s a quick read because it’s definitely geared towards kids.

Honestly, Jerome is much more forgiving than I could ever be. It was beautiful that he asked Sarah to reconcile with her dad. I wouldn’t have done that. I also had to laugh that Emmett got Thurgood Marshall & Jerome got Sarah.

Quick review that I’ll come back to refine!

The prose is so accessible to many levels of readers, and Parker Rhodes deftly handles the nuances of police brutality—the impact on Black communities, white evasion or erasure of guilt, and how to move forward. This book also teaches readers about Emmett Till and his story, linking that history to the contemporary BLM movement and police brutality. Highly recommend for all ages and in schools.

It was very eye opening and really challenged my viewpoint by the resolution. I loved seeing how the characters developed. This book also did break my heart but I would read again.
