It's always very interesting to read an author's first stories, especially to see how they've developed creatively and how they've improved their writing. Although the edition I read was edited by Prattchett, you can still see his origins (and how he drew some inspiration from it when creating the Discworld).
The humour was there, if not quite as sharp. The philosophical insights were there too, though not as breathtaking. At times I thought Pratchett was dragging the story a bit, and our journey felt slightly tiring. The sense of purpose was a little lost as we kept moving around, meeting new people. It was hard to keep track of the characters' names, and sometimes I had to go back and forth to remember what was happening - which I think is the worst thing you can force a reader to do because it completely breaks the pace.
However, I would still recommend this book. The illustrations are amazing and Pratchett is never bad. If you like Flinstones, fights and a chaotic setting, this book is for you. Either way, you'll have a good laugh.
