This book was a 4 right up until the end. I just did not like how it ended, not one little bit, and I wish I did. I was very worried it was going to follow the folktale itself but that is definitely not the road it takes and I think I would have liked it better if it did now that I have finished. The art is lovely. The simple storytelling is very reminiscent of the folklore it takes inspiration from. While I can't say I was happy with my reading experience I do appreciate that this was well done and beautiful told and had genuine moments of suspense and sadness. I can't say what about the ending I didn't like without spoilers, I'll simply say it isn't that I didn't like the ending...it's that I feel the ending was bad for the book, if that makes sense.

You ever hear an old ballad and just want more of the story? I have a weakness for any tale told in a way that makes it feel like you’re sitting around a grandmother’s hearth. Storytelling connects humanity through generation after generation, and this is a fine re-spinning of a lovely old yarn.
Stunning, inside and out. A dark retelling of selkie lore, The Blue Salt Road made me smile and teary-eyed in equal measure. Highly recommended.
This is another I picked up because of its beautiful cover. This is the first book I have read by this author but luckily I picked up more by this author which I can't wait to read.
This is a short story at just over 200 pages and can easily be read in one sitting. It has beautiful illustrations throughout making the story even more magical thanks to Bonnie Hawkins. The chapters are short and the story is brilliantly told.
It had me feeling all sorts of emotions throughout. My heart was with the sea and the animals in this story not the humans. Very cruel. But least we got a compromise in the end and a happy ending for all. Something very different for me again but I enjoyed it! I cannot wait to read more by this author.
A well deserved four stars from me. Highly recommend. Short, so perfect for those who don't have much time.

I didn't enjoy this as much as A Pocketful of Crows, but it did invoke emotion out of me, which means it's a good book.

This is a mercurial tale full of change and reversals and betrayals of all sorts. It is also beautifully illustrated. The descriptions of the North Sea and its inhabitants are so vivid and evocative that I wanted to jump into the book and fly with the seagulls and swim with the seals.

A dream of a book. Gorgeous, fun, lyrical and a page-turner. Loved!
