Great story, not sure why I can't give 5 stars. Story of the sad state of affairs in the Prison system.
The private sector stealing tax dollars from the fed and worse now with immigration and no bidding.

I probably owe it to Shane Bauer to take a moment and fully analyze what I’d like to say about this book, but emotions are high and I’d rather just get it out now. Wow, just wow. Providing first hand accounts of his experience as an undercover CO in conjunction with the historical context of prisons and their functionality throughout he nation’s history, the author perfectly incapsulates the importance of criminal justice reform and what that looks like in a correctional setting. As a criminologist and researcher, I appreciated the context regarding the private prison industry and it’s intersections with big business, politics, disenfranchisement etc. Prisons are understudied and dangerous places, but Shane, managed to dig deep and provide an account that the general public was likely unaware of before. Phenomenal writing and phenomenal work — what a fantastic read that leaves you wanting to turn apathy into action.
