i feel like this is one of those concepts that you just have to go all out for, and if you hesitate it really shows in the final product

ah yes, the True Romance of when he marries you bc he blinded you while storming into the castle and now you will never be put off by how "hideous" he thinks he is due to traumatic battle injuries.

I think I read a review of this book and that's how it landed in my TBR list. I didn't realize at the time that it's actually the last book in a long series. So there were many times I found myself skimming over backstory that had nothing to do with this book's plot, but everything to do with the series' arc. I was disappointed by how the main problem was solved, but I enjoyed the characters and their romance.
