The world RJB built is so rich, and he tells us just enough about the Divinities and to keep us wanting more

I loved this book SO MUCH and I'm so thrilled it's the first part of a trilogy so I can spend more time in this world. I loved the fantasy setting mixed with politics and espionage and the characters were just such a delight. Shara and Mulaghesh may just be on the list with my favorite characters and Mulaghesh is the main character of the second book? I am SO up for that. I can't wait to read the rest of the series. This was great fun and a great story and I completely loved it!

Novel, unique, thoughtful, complex, inventive. Has the trifecta of strong characters, plot, and world building. I particularly enjoyed the Warehouse full of miracles.

A story of conquerors and conquered, of Divinities against technology, and the danger of burying the past in an effort to forget history.

City of Stairs is an enthralling read that begins with a simple murder thriller and quickly snowballs into something much more dramatic, based in a city mired in miracles and secrets. Characters are fallible but adored, even the minor ones with little pagetime, and ones sympathies are conflicted and confused throughout.
