I love both the movies for this book and I owned Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator as a child but apparently I never read it.
Some of these books were great but I wasn't as impressed with a lot of it. Especially the grandparents, argh! Josephine and Georgina were so frustrating!
Luckily, there were the Oompa Loompas.

I was reading this to my son as his first book, and reading something out loud gives it a different dimension for someone I think. I've read C&tCF a couple times before and have always been a big fan. The story is well crafted and is Dahl at the height of his mastery over whimsy and morality while continuing to hold together as a coherent tale. TGGE sadly does not have the same characteristics. Especially reading this one out loud (I'd read this one only once before) you realize what a tangled mess it is. There's little dynamic to the story as it runs at a thousand miles an hour, and there's really no thread through. It's a few adventures that happen to need the elevator to take place. It's still classically Dahl, and his ability to maintain his character consistency amongst the strangeness of the story is admirable. And the imaginativeness of the adventures goes back to Dahl's talents. But it's just not as good a tale as its predecessor. There are many better examples of his writing. I still give this book 4 stars, but mostly on the back of C&tCF. Probably better to just read that one and stop there.

A timeless classic, what more can be said! Quentin Blake's art left a lot more to be desired hence the three stars. The story was engaging. I think this is one of the few books I'll even say is not as good as the ORIGINAL film. I realize there is a lot more to this story then when I read it as a child. The subtle similarities of greed and arrogance, and other human deficiencies. I loved this book and cannot wait to share it with my daughter's.

Read these at bedtime with the kids. We laughed quite a bit.
I think "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is my favorite of Dahl's stories. "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator" kind of left me scratching my head.

I never read these books as a child but am now experiencing them with my 8 year old son and what fun it is! He loves the Roald Dahl books and can't seem to get enough of them. The first book is very good. The second one is a little silly but I have to say I actually LOL while reading this one!

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a lot of fun but I can see why Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator hasn’t gotten a movie. It’s not bad but it feels muddled and disconnected from the first book.
