Interesting concept, fast-paced and twisty execution, it could’ve gone deeper into a lot of things but it’s a YA thriller so what do you expect

I may have stayed up way past my bedtime to finish this book even though I have work bright and early in the morning. The book was good, like really good. It was just the right amount of disorienting and incoherent to tell the story the way that it needed to be told. But the ending was just off. In some ways it was too definitive, in others, it was too ambiguous. Pessl spent 250-ish pages creating this world and the ending just seemed to steamroll over it. Major spoilers but
Spoiler For example, earlier in the book it's mentioned that Bee didn't have sex with Jim because she doesn't trust him. It also briefly mentions her freezing in action when they attempt to storm the police station, despite being an active character. She spends most of her wakes stealing cars and breaking into homes for Pete's sake. But these two tiny mentions get turned into a big (super duper spoiler ahead) ending where she was there when Jim fell out of their secret hiding place. She went there to have sex with him because reason, and then hesitated to pull him up when the ladder slipped. It was not only out of character, but the secret came out of nowhere. Bee never seemed to have a guilty conscience. She was actively trying to figure out what happened to Jim, despite knowing a major part of the answer all along? Anyway, the very last bit is a little sappy where Bee is more confident and visits her friends' graves and then tells stories of them to young, impressionable children. My point in this rant is that the ending was out of place
. I still enjoyed reading it, and only slightly regret the several hours of sleep I will never get back because of this book.

This was a book what I went through fast! It was good but not as amazing as I had hoped but I think I need to stew on this one a bit!
