What a surprise! This was one of those books that I picked up for 1$ and thought it would be a nice dull read. Then to find out it was part of a series I didn't think I'd even make it halfway through. It turned out to be a great read with a ton of depth to the story for a typical mystery book. I might have to pick up another book by this author. Definitely would recommend this book it reads like a stand-alone.

Jonathan Stride is found by Catalina Mateo, seeking his help because she is sure someone is out there trying to kill her. But can she be believed? She's a teenage prostitute who carries a knife with her wherever she goes. Stride's cop partner, Maggie, doesn't trust her. However, Stride harbours enormous guilt over being unable to protect Catalina's mother ten years earlier, when she was murdered by her psychotic ex-husband. So he's willing to help Catalina. The investigation into Catalina's stalker eventually uncovers links to a disappearance being investigated by Stride's estranged girlfriend, Serena Dial, and ultimately even to the deaths of Catalina's parents.

I have yet to read a bad book by this author! This is intricately plotted, suspenseful and full of twists. My only real complaint is too much description when it comes to where characters are travelling. I don't need to know every single road they go down! I see this in so many books. I just don't get it. There's something of a car chase scene, and it's rendered mostly ineffective because the focus is on the routes taken by the participants, rather than on the danger involved in the chase itself, or the stakes faced by the characters. I was skimming, which you really shouldn't be doing in a bloody car chase scene!

Otherwise, this was was very enjoyable.

I love the Jonathan Stride series. There is so much to the books, the mystery as well as the characters. I care about them and their lives are never boring, they are complicated, and at times difficult. By the end I'm already wanting the next book to find out what's next in their lives.

Stride has a blast from the past when a 16 year old appears at his house needing his help. Cat is he daughter of a friend who was murdered 10 years ago, Cat is traumatized and may or may not have murdered someone and now someone may be after her. As Stride gets involved with the case he starts uncovering a prostitution ring involving some of the cities politicos and not all is what is seems. Meanwhile, Maggie is having a fling with a fellow officer in another town to offset her feelings for the mistakes she & Stride made in their relationship and Serena is still gone from Stride's life. Another seemingly straight forward case from the past rears it's ugly head combining with the current case and it's all hands on deck. Stride has to get to the bottom of Cat's trauma from her parent's suicide/murder to tie in with what is currently happening all while trying to reconcile with Serena. Will Maggie & Serena get over past hurts and will Stride be with his love and solve the cases?

I liked this story, and appreciate the connections of events that at first appear disconnected. There was one storyline that never really got resolved, and I hope to see it return in a book later on the series.

I don't know what it is about Brian Freeman's books but for me they always start well, dip in the middle so that I consider stopping reading, and then pick up spectacuarly at the end so that I am stumbling over words because I am trying to take it in so fast. I've only read some of this series so I think I have skipped a few plot points (as the books rely quite heavily on you knowing the past plots) but also it is explained enough for you to feel like you haven't missed anything... This plot moved fast enough and had enough twists for me to be satisfied in the end, but if like me you struggle at points in his books I encourage you to push on as usually the ends are worth it.
