I wasn’t in the mood for something like this and I’m not feeling it right now. It wasn’t bad, I just don’t want to spend time reading it and I don’t mind not knowing how the story ends.

Man, I needed a book like this to round the year off. This book has the following:

-setting and feeling similar to Jeff Lindsay's Dexter series
-main character of a police force who was busted down to Food Inspector, and has to solve the case in this capacity
-the casual mystery of a severed arm that is in the rigor mortis stage of flipping the bird (with no deaths/injurys coming out of the woodwork to make this mystery easier to solve)
-voodoo witchery
-and a REAL MONKEY- thats right, the title is not figurative: we get a monkey here!

I have had Carl Hiaasen recommended to me over the years given a certain subset of books that I had professed to enjoying. When I looked him up, I had determined that he would likely not be for me. While he does not hit the comedic notes as strongly as straight fictional authors like Christopher Moore or Graeme Simision, it was definetly an easy and fun ride for me at the end of this year!

I don't even know where to begin. I love listening to Hiaasen's stories on audio. Andrew Yancy is one of those characters who has made some interesting moral slips in the past and who has both ridiculously bad and good luck simultaneously. By the end, you are definitely rooting for him because he is the least bad of all the crazy people in this story (unless you count the monkey but he did some pretty awful things too-possibly just due to his diet though). There are severed arms, float planes, crazy ex-convict girlfriends, medicare fraud, crooked doctors, corrupt cops, a hurricane and just about anyone/anything else you can think of in this story. I cannot wait to listen to another. This would make a great vacation read (especially if Florida or the Bahamas are your destination). You also might not want to eat much while you are listening. Yancy's role of roach inspector extraordinaire does tend to turn the stomach. Disclaimer--these books are NOT for young children. There are very adult situations involved.
