I'm in a weird state with this book in that I truly don't know how this book exists. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad it exists, but I'm just baffled it exists.
I think this is probably my least favorite in The Shadowhunter Chronicles thus far, but I think that's mostly because this is the first time Cassie has co-authored an entire novel with someone and it's her first time writing with that someone, Wesley Chu, so I think that's why this feels a little off to me.
That said, this is still a Shadowhunters novel, so all the great standbys are all present: the humor, romance, and action are all pitch perfect. Cassie has gotten those things down to such a science that I don't think she could do badly at them even if she tried.
The plot is where things felt stretched a little thin, especially since this was the first time I was able to guess the ending of the book almost to a tee.
However, I still really enjoyed myself. The party scene was absolutely my favorite, especially the part where Alec comes in to see Magnus dancing with the fam from New York. That made my heart feel full.
This book was a really fun romp and felt like an extended version of a story that might have been cut from The Bane Chronicles and it was really fun to go back to pre-City of Fallen Angels Alec and Magnus. I'm intrigued to see where this trilogy goes and how it weaves in with the rest of The Shadowhunter Chronicles so we'll see where Clare and Chu take us next time! In the meantime, I'm getting geared up for the release of Chain of Gold in the fall and the release of the rest of Ghosts of the Shadow Market in the summer!

This one is for the Malac lovers. It dives in on Magnus and Alec discovering the beginning of their love for each other while fighting the battles that their everyday lives come with. It digs a little bit into Magnus's past life and how he became who he is now. It starts showing the beginning of Helen and Aline's relationship as well.

Slow to start, but eventually the stakes became real for the couple. It felt like the author wanted to push further into their intimacy but held back for the age group. By the end, I was wondering if this was worth following as a series and I'm still unsure. I like Magnus more than Alec, and the constant 3rd & 5th wheeling nature of the story was somewhat frustrating.

And, while all of her books are heavily anticipated by her readers, I didn't know about this RSOM until a week before it came out (Note: I am typically one of the first people to know about TSC news.)
It took me about 50 pages to really get invested in the plot, however, as a Book!Malec shipper, I was all about the fluff.
Clare and Chu did an amazing job blending the fluff with action and plot. As always, the representation in this book was on point. I highly recommend reading RSOM.
