In The Witches of Ascalon is inspired by a real historical event where a court sentenced to death eighty women on charges with sorcery, explores the beauty of a community hated simply for existing.

This one reads the most like a folk tale and a parable than the rest of the book and is quite feminist in its portrayal. The inevitable betrayal of a man after only being shown kindness and generosity was gut wrenching.

"It made me harden in my soul sometimes when I came out smiling to him for another lesson I knew would not be used for bringing life into the world, the intoxicating vines with their virtue-ripened fruit."
