What We Lost

This story of a girl was incredible. Enjoyed very minute and can't wait to read more.

This was a touching story about a girl who is struggling with her faith and trying to deal with several bad things in her life with her family, friends, etc. She is the pastor's daughter and struggles with the image of a "perfect family" when her family is far from perfect. While religion definitely plays a huge factor in the story, it's not what I would call "preachy" at all. I thought that her doubts and feelings were portrayed very well and that a lot of people (especially teens) could relate to the questioning of her beliefs that she experiences. An interesting side note: I listened to the audio book and saw that it was narrated by the author herself.

Love this book. I love the narrator and her budding romance and her doubts and how realistic she feels and the mystery and the religious commentary and the whole thing.

I worried for Sam the whole time - that the missteps of those around her would push her away from faith but mostly that she'd never find her voice. Sam's okay. I don't want to talk about the ending, but Sam is going to be just fine.

And now to go read everything else by Sara Zarr...

Some people say the ending to this was unrealistic; I say it was hopeful.

A good, solid YA novel. I quite liked it.

This would be between 3 and 4 stars. It's a well-written, touching story about family, faith and loss that may be predictable in its twists, but has a good heart. The characters are better drawn than many others in tis genre and Zarr's ability to pull the reader into a world taht echoes their own is on full display here. Good for readers transitioning into more serious YA.

As person of faith who never quite fit in as a youth-group-kid, this story really hit my heart in a beautiful, unexpected way. Hopefully a full review to come.

heartbreaking read.
