It’s refreshing to see older characters carrying the text. That’s one thing I think the author does really well, write diverse Black women and she doesn’t disappoint with this latest novel. I’m surprised at some of the complaints about the characters and the storyline because I thought the characters were well developed and the plot line was solid! Again I appreciate her writing about the life experiences of older Black women in present day.

I received this book as a goodreads giveaway and it is the first book I’ve read by Terry McMillan.

This is a story about how it’s never too late to improve your life. Loretha “Lo” is a 68 year old, three times married, successful beauty shop owner. When Lo’s sweet husband Carl suddenly has a heart attack, Lo is in a fog of grief.

Lo has a wonderful group of friends and together they make strides in improving their health and relationships. Lo and Lucky improve their health. Lo improves her relationships with her children and her sister. Lo is forced to make decisions about the future of her business.

I enjoyed the strong female bonds of friendship and sisterhood. I want to know more. What’s next for Lo and her pretend sisters.

I liked this well enough but it was a lot more serious than I expected so I think that has coloured my general review. Loretha's life takes a turn she never expected and this novel tells the story of how her family and friends help her and each other through all the ups and downs life throws at you. This is a story of taking care of yourself physically and mentally as we age and accepting that it really isn't all downhill from here. My one negative about this book was the narration. Ms. McMillan narrated her own book (and I looked at her other books and she seems to do this regularly). In my opinion, author narrations should be left for memoirs unless they can truly bring each character to life. This book had many characters and I needed to hear those different voices to get the true sense of each character.
I do recommend it though, it's a solid take on family, friends and life in general.

Read for book club. Didn't love it. It's the adult version of the Giving Tree...Loretha Curry just keeps giving and giving and giving.

My mother-in-law mailed me her copy of this book. I currently have a number of health issues that could at least partially be relieved by a shift in diet and exercise. Also I really miss seeing my friends during this isolation period. So I basically cried the whole time I read this.

A decent read. From the beginning it was a wild ride. The ending felt rushed, but I was glad for the hopefulness that was being eluded to. Some hidden gems lesson-wise are in there to help deal with life and loss.
