Pierce Brown shot for the stars with this, and boy did he hit his mark. Such a unique and complicated world, mixed with love able and despicable characters. The plot is intuitive but keeps you guessing, and the twists, though obvious in hindsight, were perfect. I had some problems with writing as he developed the games, but all in all it’s a brilliant start to what I imagine will be an incredible series. The reaper is here, and red is rising. Also I HATE the ending and I think that’s why you love it so much.

Yes. If the hunger games were way more brutal and on Mars. Basically!

Another book where I'm honestly not sure how I feel about it and therefore how to rate it. #2 is on hold from the library but will take a few months until it's my turn. Guess I'll take that time to decide if I'm interested in continuing or not.

There is quite a bit of violence and some death, but I wouldn't necessarily say it's grimdark.

The odd thing I'm taking away from this one is that the protagonist was the only flushed out, fully 3D character. Everyone else felt like an NPC or a plot device. Similarly, it feels like there is a larger world sketched out in the background, but 60-75% of this story was a game of capture the flag.
