Here's the thing. When I went into this book, I was expecting a deep look at racism at the corruption of our justice system. And that's what I got . . . until the last chapter. There is a strong message in this book--a message about how black people are treated compared to white people, a message about what the criminal justice system does to young people, a message about a mother's right to her own child. But that message is indisputably diluted by the final twist. Before the final chapter, this book is one kind of story, and after that chapter, it's another. I like both kinds of stories, but the first has more power than the latter. Sure, the twist is chilling, and it made me go back and reevaluate all the scenes that came before. But it harms the message, which is a shame, because the message is such a good one.
