This was a very helpful book for any person struggling with shame. The author is great at explaining the concepts that cause shame systemically, and how to unlearn that and move forward.

Overall thoughts on the book:

I felt this book was just what I needed. I have a lot of shame that I thought I had already unpacked from my hyper religious background, but I didn't realize I was slipping back into the old comfortable habits of blaming myself for every little misstep I took. It was a really good check in with myself to hold myself with more grace & to also extend that grace & love to the people around me.

Favorite Quote:

"The impact of others is everywhere."

Something I learned:

I learned that I feel shame in ways I hadn't realized & that I need to start forgiving myself for my shortcomings & stop putting so much pressure on myself to be perfect at all times. I also learned that community can be healing & uplifting when we encourage each other & hold each other accountable with kindness & a gentle heart.

Devon is such a great writer/speaker. I need to get a physical copy of this so I can reread bits that didn't work as well in the audio format. Also I need some friends lmao

This is the type of book you find yourself recommending to everyone you encounter for several weeks after finishing it.
Amazing book specifically for the autistic and/or trans community but for everyone else as well. I truly believe that there is something for everybody in Unlearning Shame.
Many books in this genre could be short magazine articles and the premise is repeated so many times it feels like a waste of time to continue reading past the first couple chapters.
Dr. Price always does an excellent job of making sure that the reader not only stays engaged but is also learning through every page.

I am not typically a 5* rater. That rating has to be earned and Devon Price most certainly deserves to have it.

I went into this like “yeah yeah I know this” but the way Price lays it all out has really stuck with me and actually has helped me notice when shame comes up in my life and what to do about it.
In the time I read this book I:
-confided in a friend about a shameful experience I had been embarrassed to talk about and received a lot of love
-realized I want to talk with more people about my shame so I started going to a peer support group
-have a better idea of what my desires may be and starting to move away from “ugh that’s so cringe I can’t do that”

This books is also wonderfully anarchic and talks a lot about communal based approaches vs hyper individualism. If you are caught up in the activist/organizing/mutual aid sphere and approaching burnout you could probably find some benefit here.

FWIW: I am an autistic queer weirdo and that lines up a lot with the authors experience. I can’t say how much it would help folks outside of that experience but I think it’s worth checking out.
