I work in a library. This series is ridiculously popular with our young customers, with the films and seven-book-long series rarely staying on the shelves longer than a few hours after being returned.

So yes, I was curious.

It's a quick read for an adult, and of course perfect in short diary-entry chapters and chatty narration for 8-12 year olds.

Greg writes about his life, mostly about his family and school. Incidents include his attempts to become Class Clown, avoid getting the Cheese Touch and make it through a performance of the Wizard of Oz as a tree without his brother laughing at him.

I can see the appeal - at that age I was obsessed with the Judy Blume and Paula Danziger equivalent (though not humorous).

But I just didn't like Greg!! He isn't a very good friend, is all out for himself, seems quite anti-social and conniving and just didn't 'grow' as a character (apart from one attempt to stick up for his even wimpier friend). Though, to be fair, this may happen in later books more.

It's funny for the age group, great format and will hit home with the things Greg gets up to.

I won't stop recommending them, they are well written and fun, but I can't see myself ploughing through books 2-7.

I think some books you CAN just be too old for :)

For a kid's book, I enjoyed it. I laughed out loud several times and, as an added bonus, finally got some of the jokes my 9 year-old son has been telling me.

I got a bit nostalgic recently and decided I was going to reread the early books in this series and then read the newer ones, just because. :) The first time I read a Wimpy Kid book was when I was 13, and I remember thinking it was downright hilarious. This book really does hold up well and I can easily see why the series continues to be so popular! I actually really admire the balance of humor Kinney has created; it's part middle school drama, part bathroom humor (which, lets be honest, is truly peak comedy for many middle school kids), and part slice of life/family humor which I think it relatable to not just kids but older readers, too! All around just a fun book that I'm going to keep recommending to people.

Best Moments in Book #1:
-Greg accidently making Manny eat a "spider"
-the whole idea/presence of the Cheese Touch - this cheese is ICONIC. If you read these books as a kid then you know this to be a straight up fact
-"ZooWeeMama!"

My ten year old reads these for fun, so I picked them up when I was stuck in bed with the flu. I have to say that I appreciate them more now that my son is older than when I taught middle school years ago. Ha.
