I really enjoyed this story with all the fun little plot twists, even though there were some very melancholy moments as we learn how their marriage fell apart in the first place. It’s always interesting to me to see the lives of the Ton in historical England and this was no exception. I really loved seeing the way Nathan and Evelyn were able to overcome their grief and finally see each other as they once were: a happily mated couple. I was thrilled that Nathan finally convinced Evelyn that his love never faltered and never will. I'm looking forward to seeing the next book in the series to find out if Jack was able to escape the scandal that chase him out of England.

I thought I had read one of Julia London's historical romances, but if I did it slipped my mind. And after finishing this one, I think that London a good enough writer that I wouldn't forget her heroes and heroines.

Evelyn and Nathan started their life together in an arranged marriage that had become happy. However, they have not lived together for three years.

What has kept them apart? Can they live together? Can they love each other once again. Well, the last question is easily answered because this is a romance.

But the best part of romance is how the author brings things together for a happy ending. London does a great job of including all the elements necessary to make for a wonderful story.

The book was good. I loved the banter between Nathan and Benton. Through the book you can see how Nathan appreciates Benton.

Can I just talk about how upset I am that no one seemed to understand Evelyn's pain for the death of her own child?
Everyone kept saying she had to put it behind her, but how can a mother put her own son behind her?
The death of a child is a wound that stays with a person forever. So there's no forgetting or putting behind one's back.

And all that talk about Robbie, Evelyn's son, not being meant to live more than a few months was just bullshit.
His death was a tragedy. And that's it. There's no being meant to live a certain time.

Gosh, when we talk about children and bad stuff happening to them, I get really emotional. :(

The end of the book was beautiful, though - Evelyn and Nathan, together in the nursery, sunlight streaming in from the windows and the words "Their family was together again."

It was strangely bittersweet. To me the sun here represents dear Robbie who was loved so much and died so prematurely and the hope that comes with Evelyn and Nathan having resolved their problems, being together again and waiting another child.

Previous rating: 4 out of 5 stars

2022 Rating: 4 stars
Reread this one in 2022. It's still one my top favorite marriage in trouble romances. My biggest issue with it was how the hero got mad at the heroine for *almost* cheating on him when he actually *did* sleep with women while they were apart. So, I took off a star for that BS. But, I really did like the H/h as a couple and believed in their relationship.

Trigger warning: lost of a child, grief, cheating

I think I might have historical fatigue, just couldn't get over the feeling that this book was something I've read over and over again. Where's the next Sarah MacLean, universe?! Please deliver it to my bookshelf now. K thanks bye.

The Book of Scandal is the first in the Scandal series by Julia London. The only other book I have read from this author is "Ruthless Charmer" which was some time ago, and I lost track of this author. But after finding a review of this one on goodreads from a fellow friend, I decided to pick this one up at my local library. After reading the synopsis, I was very fascinated with the hero dragging his wife home to protect them from scandal. Definitely drew me in. The story begins with Nathan Grey, being informed of the huge scandal that is spreading like wildfire through London. When he is warned that his wife may be implicated, and if they are on the losing side, they are both in a world of hurt. So he rushes to London, not having seen his wife for three years, to take her home. At first she is very resistant and stubborn, so he practically dumps her in his carriage. Thus begins a wonderful tale of rebuilding past hurt and mistrusts, and learning to simply love again.

The Book of Scandal was a story that I magically fell in love with from the start. This tale is the epitome of everything I adore about romance novels, especially historical ones. I had forgotten the talent of storytelling by Julia London that takes your breath away. Once you start reading this book, you start to see its not a simple romance of a couple that has been separated for three years, it goes way deeper than that. They both have been married for about ten years, but three years previous they lost their son, and drifted apart. You see how much they still love each other, even after all this time, but there is a emotional block that is preventing them from finding their HEA. The plot thickens a bit with various scenes and there is a mystery aspect added to the story that give this story even more depth.

I really enjoyed seeing these two slowly fall in love again, and rekindle their desire for each other. It is very heart wrenching at times, and I will warn you, that a box of tissues might be needed from time to time, however there are some uplifting scenes that make you feel giddy inside. A stunning romance that sucks you into the story and with the detail, the tender romantic scenes, and characters too endearing, you will find yourself enraptured from the first page to the last!!

3.5. A slight twist to the feisty lady/roguish lord tale in that they are married, have had the HEA, then been split apart by disaster. Under the surface hatred there still lies passion though, which develops after Nathan rings an unwilling Lady Evelyn back to their country house. As all good, feisty historical heroines must, she seeks revenge by.....spending his money! Gradually they come back to each other, getting over the death of their son, attempts on life and treason for a second HEA.
