This was an absolutely amazing anthology! I loved all the stories, and am certainly taking note of many of the authors and hope to read more of their works!

Halloween wasn’t a thing in France when I was growing up. Then globalization and marketing did their thing and it’s everywhere now, but it still doesn’t mean much to me. What I’m trying to say is that I don’t get excited about October and scary movies etc. And yet joyful anticipation made my heart skip a beat when I first saw the cover of this anthology. I mean, look at the list of authors and tell me it’s not impressive. All these very talented people were given the title of the book—Soul Food Stories—and full freedom. Each of them incorporated food in their stories in whichever manner inspired them. We get poisoned food, literal soul food, food that’s not exactly central to the story but is fundamental to who the characters are, creatures that feed on others because of course… Stories that are all at the very least eerie and unnerving, with some downright flirting with horror.

I apologize for the bad puns in the coming paragraph, I couldn’t resist. The stories are short and I won’t lie, some left me hungry for more. Though whether that’s a bad thing is debatable. They’re all different in length and tone, a buffet of bite-sized tales—with the exception of the last one, a novella written by Ann McMan, a longer treat to round off the experience. Whether it’s Anna Burke (who gifts us with two stories), Jenn Alexander, Virginia Black, you can’t go wrong with any of the authors involved. Soul Food Stories is the perfect mise en bouche to get into the spooky season. Bon appétit!

I received a copy from the publisher and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
