This novel was provided to McGuire's Patreon supporters (and you can access it by becoming a supporter at the $1 per story level). It's part of a series of stories that gives the history of the Price and Healy families featured in the Incryptid series, and McGuire has said it's useful to read before reading the 2022 Incryptid book: Spelunking Through Hell. This one is not a happy story, but it's a necessary one, digging into the grief a family suffers when a loved one is lost, and the way in which it breaks different members of the family in different ways - and how some members of that family grow and change as a result. I care about these characters so much, and hope they eventually get the satisfying endings they deserve.
