So much pop culture stuff in the update for the second edition! Ah well. Reads like a very abbreviated textbook for sure, but some of the illustrations are great, funny and with a sort of historical gravity at the same time.

This was pretty interesting! I knew about a lot of what is covered but it was interesting to learn new things as well. I think that there could have been more pieces on women because as often happens in history, women seem to be erased. We know about Frida and Selena but please please inform about those people may not know about... anyway it was still interesting and I'm a fan of history told through comics.

A great start if you’re looking for a visual survey. I wish the words were printed in font rather than handwritten. Nevertheless, the format is excellent in this survey of history. I’ve taken note of people and events that I want to learn more about, which I believe that is exactly how this book should be taken. Rough ideas and concepts that beg for you to read and explore more about in other books and avenues.

In cartoon format, we get a pretty good and comprehensive history of Latino history in the U.S. with great coverage of groups and movements. This book should be required reading.

I want to rate this higher. The book has a lot of good information, but it is extremely disjointed; leaping from subject to subject with very little flow. Also, it is not very well organized.
For example: the first page or Part 2 "Into the cauldron 1891-1957" talks about FDR's Good Neighbor Policy and Disney's "Three Caballeros". After that it jumps back to the 19th century. But why does that section start there?

Probably more Latino history in one place than the average American has seen in a lifetime. Lalo's black-and-white art aligns well with the text and the various cast of characters relating the history. There's a biting humor behind it all that seems absolutely appropriate and makes this work a gem.

This was an interesting short book just as expected. It attempts to tackle incredibly nuanced history in a few short words and 200 pages of illustrations. I think it’s an interesting introduction that is especially fascinating with more contextual reads!

This is one of the required books for the YAL class I teach at OU...it hits two genre: Graphic stories and nonfiction. I think I fought the book the whole way through because the topic's too BIG to cover in 200 pages in a graphic format. Starting with Christopher Columbus and ending, with the new edition, very recently, there's so much to cover.

I was horrified by two typos (it's for its) and one factual error, and it distracted me from the good stuff in the book.

I did appreciate the nuanced discussion of Hispanic cultures...not just Cuban, or Mexican, or Puerto Rico...not just The Alamo...not just Diego Rivera...not just Fidel Castro. The recent history, being events I remembered, was entertaining...I could compare and contrast my own recollections.

I found the format harder to follow than a traditional story and didn't feel like I was really getting it. The 'actors' who commented on the story in random ways were also distracting to me.

Then, in the last pages, I fell in love. Stavans has the characters in his history DEFINE history from their POV...I found those pages fascinating and it put everything I'd learned into perspective.

As a quick, surface introduction to the subject, I think this book has value. As a discussion of the complex, complicated human issues, not so much.

I'm interested to see what the students see.
