I wish I could make everyone in federal parliament read this issue’s Meanjin Papers by Nick Martin, ‘The Nauru Diaries’. Martin is not the typical bleeding heart latte sipper. He shouldn’t be easy to dismiss. But maybe they have read him, and are ignoring him. As Martin writes, ‘after multiple deaths and countless protests, whistleblowers, articles, the leaked Nauru files, occasional interviews, invariably the answer was the same: sticking to a much discredited, hollow, ‘lives at sea’ argument.’ (p. 55) Like Martin, ‘I have been disgusted listening to the moronic mantra of “illegal immigrants/we stopped the boats/drowning at sea”.’ (p. 64) Maybe, just maybe, Martin speaking out about his time on Nauru might change some minds. Dear God, I hope so.
