i like joe meno.

i like his run on sentences and the way they make me feel.

that said, not my favorite - i'm still a fan of his short stories and the boy detective fails.

cute, quirky, enjoyable.

Weird in the best possible way. Especially loved the dialogue and how true to real life it was. The juxtaposition of the unusual with the totally ordinary is what will stick with me.

I haven't been reading as much as I should due to a hectic fall work schedule, but this was the perfect book to pick up and finish within two days. It was an easy read even though writing was done very well, and was very engaging. The story was quirky, but for some reason "took place in 1999", even though it felt like he was describing art school hipster drop outs currently living in Wicker Park - riding their bikes consistently through snowy Chicago winters. Would recommend to certain friends, but not others.

It's not my taste. It's too dramatic for it to lead the story basically back where it started.

Odile and Jack are both in their early twenties, unconventional, lonely, and disillusioned. When they meet, they seem so good together...but maybe it's not their time; maybe it's like one of them says: they're too much alike.

This started out awesome, with a wintery scene of Odile riding her bike. I loved Odile, not so much Jack, but they are both well-written, angsty characters; and overall this is a great character-centered story with some pictures and drawings, which fits because Odile and Jack both came out of art school. An extra star for the Chicago 1999 setting and all of the bike riding in the book.

The author's third title for the book best describes the whole story - Young People on Bicycles Doing Troubling Things. Yup. Well written and painfully real. And from other reviews, I learned the term Manic Pixie Dream Girl (MPDG), though she was more nightmarish in my opinion - angsty and mean.

Not quite for me.  While it wasn't bad, it wasn't very good.  Meno gives his characters unique quirks yet they still turn out uninteresting.  The ending at least, while not monumentous, does make this a safe read at least.  I 'read' this on audiobook, and would have given this an extra half star for the reader if there was a 2.5.  She probably helped me actually finish this.
