This was a good read! I thought the plot was very interesting, and I love a queer apocalypse story about food. I found the writing style to be poetic in a way that challenged me and made me focus while I read. Overall, it was a pretty book that had funny and interesting themes. I didn’t love the ending, but I did love the acknowledgements page of all the food/restaurants/books that inspired the author.

This novel follows a young chef who takes a job in an ultra-exclusive community high in the Italian mountains where the Uber wealthy have gone to escape the smog that has engulfed the world, causing crops to fail and health concerns to run rampant. The story explores grief, excess, love, and obligation in a propulsive narrative that keeps you turning pages to see what wild thing the architects of the community have come up with next. The moral ambiguity of the characters and how to navigate a near dystopian scenario makes for a fun story. The pacing at the end bothered me a little, but overall I loved this one. C Pam Zhang is shaping up to be an insta-buy author for me.
