Freckeles is such a dear sweet book. It took me a long time to get into it, and even then, I could only read it for short periods of time until I felt like I needed a break. I usually like books that I pick up and then can’t put down. However, this little story kept me coming back even though the plot line was less gripping and more meandering. It was a nice refreshing read and left me feeling uplifted. An all around good book.

Very sentimental with lots of lurid action and improbable turns of fortune... in the best and most appropriate style of the time. For me, action yes, some sentiment, yes (I loved Angel yelling at Freckles near the end and McLean's affection for Freckles), but not anywhere near to that level. Improbable turns of fortune... maybe?

Poetic descriptions of the Limberlost scenery, birds, and animals-here for that. The Bird Woman and Angel dominating the entire logging crew? So here for that. Mrs. Duncan being so sweet and brave and scaring herself and me and Freckles doing him a favor? Heck, yes. Happy endings, naturally.

Still prefer A Girl of the Limberlost, but suspect the nods to Freckles, Angel, and the Bird Woman will be better now.

This was so cute!!!
I remember watching this one movie based off the second book "Girl of the Limberlost" when I was a girl. I never knew there were books until a few years ago to go with the story. I decided to give this a go, and I am not disappointed.

Freckles is a very kind young man who is trying to find work, but he has a missing hand. He is an orphan and lived a pretty hard life, but he is doing his best. He is respectful and does his best to do right. When he actually gets a good job, he finds himself falling in love with the forest, meeting people and making friends everywhere he goes, and finding someone he wants to protect.

I very much enjoyed it and hope to read the sequel soon.

I loved this book. As I was listening to it I kept thinking how. Is would fit in so perfectly with the required reading list at the boys' school. Just a sweet story about loss, friendship, family, loyalty, nature... there is love, danger, suspense.

This was a wonderfully sweet story of virtuous characters that are easy to root for set in the lush Limberlost of Indiana. You can see how much love GSP had for the Limerlost swamp and its many creatures and plants through her writing. This is the story of loyal and hardworking Freckles and the people he came to love and who came to love him. It's a nice escape from the bustle of today to a simpler time. I can't wait to read her other works of fiction!

Definitely sappy but beautiful too. Cute love story. It is strange though to read about someone's love of nature while at the same time they are happily employed by those destroying it with no thought or care to its preservation. Early 1900's was a different time for the Naturalist, I suppose. Now, we are hopefully fighting hard to preserve or restore these stunning ecosystems.

At first, going into this book it was a little slow. But I kept going and it picked up. I really liked the love story that it portrayed.
