I have always loved Ruth Rendell but my experience with the Inspector Wexford series has been sketchy. I have resolved to read or reread all of the books in this series. Rendell is 78 years old this year and...well...I'm not sure how many more years she'll be writing. At any rate, "From Doon with Death" was published the mid 60s and it has stood the test of time remarkably well which is, I think, a testament to the skill of Rendell as a writer. Good stuff.

I'm hoping to read all 21 of this series so thought I should start with the first one, written in 1964. It must have been quite shocking at that time to have a gay relationship so prominent in a book.

Was probably shocking when it was written, not so much now. Evocative writing & introduction to Wexford & Burden.

This was one of the shortest mysteries I've read and felt on par in some ways with Agatha Christie though not as complex a story as hers. I did like it and read it in two sittings and will likely continue with the series at some point in the future.

I love inspector Wexford. I've decided to start over and retread them now that I can access the eNYPL collection.

So happy to have finally had the chance to read the first Inspector Wexford mystery. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book can proudly share a bookshelf with her later installments. Although relatively short, it is a well-crafted mystery, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Both Wexford and Burden are introduced in this book and although we aren't given much insight into their personal life, their personalities are already pretty well developed. I have to admit that I solved the mystery a little sooner than I was supposed to, making Wexford's 'big reveal' at the end a little anticlimactic, but I'm not sure I would figured it out so soon had I read this book during the era in which it was originally published.

Slow start but picked up. Somewhat dated but it was written 5, 6 decades ago? To be expected. Absolutely reading the following books.
