Okay. Few things.
First, the worst: klaxon!!! DEAD LESBIAN SYNDROME!!! Och, Jodi Taylor, I'm so gutted. I never thought her capable of such lows. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the first mention of a female same-sex relationship. And what happens? A very little way into the book, one of them is killed. How I wish some of the (many) heterosexual relationships were as expendable as this single lesbian one.
Second: I'm still puzzled, trying to reconcile Max's dynamics with Leon #2 with her relationship with Leon #1. Apart from Taylor's idiosyncratic well-written sex scenes, Max seems indifferent towards him, even hostile over the wedding, here in Book Five!
And, oh! Lastly, Zara Ramm's narration! She continues to mispronounce and misread things ('indicated' for 'indicted'; wander/wonder; worriers/warriors). But I love her all the same.
Why did no one give her even a brief primer in Greek names, though?! If you weren't obsessed with the Taylor/Ramm collaboration, instead of wincing (like me) every time she mangled Xerxes as "Zurkeys" (?!?!?!!), you might have screamed with frustration. Really, could she not have asked someone how to say 'Phaeacians'? Lmao
Three stars because I love this series. Anybody else doing dead lesbians would get one star.

I am loving where this story arc has gone. You certainly can't predict these books!
I think if I were Max, I would have passed out in the first 25% of this book. She takes a beating in this one! As usual, the bit of history thrown in is both intriguing and educational.
A co-worker and I have been having a bit of a race with these, he's going to be pissed that I finished already.

I think what I enjoy so much about these books is that they're cleverly written.
Jodi Taylor builds tension and then dissipates it through conedy. These characters have you shouting at them for being so stupidly reckless mostly because you're genuinely concerned for their safety. Despite all the chaos that goes on, these books feel cosy and comfortable to read.
