Mainly thinking about this book in terms of it's win of the Otherwise Award for exploring gender, I find it interesting though by no means innovative in that sense. Of the two aliens: the chameleon is war-like and always male; the changeling is curious and (eventually) empathetic and, while being agender, says that it prefers to take the form of females (though it spends much of the book as a man). If there can be anything said for the gender exploration (of which only the agender alien is really doing any), it is that as the changeling explores what it means to be human, it comes to approximate what it means to be gendered.
